A dental crown is a cover or “cap” that fits over a damaged tooth. The restoration protects the tooth and allows the patient to regain the ability to bite with confidence. Our Coffs Harbour dental offices offer all-ceramic, metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and zirconia crowns. Ceramic crowns, also known as porcelain crowns, can be colour-matched to blend with your natural teeth so no one can tell that you underwent restorative work.
Dental Crowns
Who is a candidate for a dental crown?
There are multiple reasons why someone may require a crown. Crowns are typically used when dental fillings or pre-formed fillings would be insufficient to restore a tooth. In many cases, a dental crown allows patients to retain a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.
Crowns are commonly placed following invasive restorative treatments, such a root canal. To remove infected tissue from within a tooth, your dentist has to drill a hole on the top of the tooth. A dental crown is often the preferred choice of restoration following root canal therapy or another invasive restorative treatment.
A crown may be needed following trauma. If your tooth becomes cracked or seriously chipped, a crown may be your only option for preserving what remains of your tooth. Tooth preservation is often preferable to tooth extraction. Tooth roots play an important role in maintaining jawbone health.
Crowns can support a dental bridge. If you have lost one tooth, the teeth on either side of the gap in your smile can support a traditional bridge. A traditional bridge is held in place through the use of two crowns that sit on abutment teeth. The crowns are attached to one or more false teeth that fill in the gap in your smile.
You may also need to have a dental crown placed if your current crown is worn or loose. The average lifespan of a dental crown is around 10 years, but the restorations can last much longer when properly cared for.
How are crowns placed?
Dental crown placement typically requires two visits to our Coffs Harbour dental office. During the first visit, your tooth will need to be prepped. Prepping requires the removal of natural tooth structure so your tooth crown can rest on your tooth without protruding.
Before your tooth is prepped, local anesthesia will be used to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Once your tooth is prepped, our digital scanner will take images of your teeth. You will be given a temporary crown while your permanent restoration is fabricated by a trusted laboratory. Special care will be taken to ensure that your permanent crown matches the aesthetics of your natural smile.
After a few weeks, your permanent crown will arrive at our office and your second visit will be scheduled. During your final visit, your doctor will ensure that the crown is a perfect fit and matches your cosmetic expectations. A strong cement will then be used to place the crown.
