Children's Dentistry

At Magic Smiles, we offer comprehensive dental care for the whole family, including children. According to the Australian Dental Association, your child should have his or her first dental visit when their first tooth erupts or by the time the child reaches the age of one – whichever comes first.

Working with children requires patience, smiles, and the occasional silly joke. Our dental team takes great care to ensure that children feel welcome at Magic Smiles. Children also come with unique oral health needs, which we can address at any of our two office locations in Coffs Harbour and Woolgoolga.

Is your child between the ages of 2 and 17? They may be entitled to $1000 of dental treatment from Medicare through the Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS). If you are unsure about eligibility, call Medicare direct (132 150) to speak to one of their customer service representatives.

Benefits of Kids' Dentistry

The road to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums starts early. During your child’s visit for checkups, cleanings, or preventative treatments, a member of our dental team will take the time to teach your child about good oral hygiene habits. The visits are also a great time for parents to learn important information about teething and other important developmental milestones.

Beyond teaching good oral hygiene habits, our dental team will look for tooth decay and signs of developmental problems. Having a healthy set of baby teeth is critical for the emergence of straight and strong adult teeth. If your child needs specialized treatment for a developmental issue, our dentists will gladly provide a referral.

Children are prone to dental problems like teeth grinding (which most outgrow) and cavities. Tooth decay may be a problem for children who consume sugary foods and drinks.

Older children and teenagers can often benefit from orthodontic treatments through Metal braces or clear braces like Invisalign®. The manufacturer of clear aligners even makes a special aligner, Invisalign Teen, that alerts parents when the trays are not worn for the required 22 hours per day. We partner with an orthodontist – Dr. Tiffany Huang – who visits our practice from Sydney for all your needs.

Preventative Treatments

Preventative treatments are an important component of children’s dentistry. During your family visit to one of our Coffs Harbour dental practices for your child’s checkup or cleaning, your doctor may recommend sealants or fluoride.

Sealants are a thin layer of biocompatible plastic that places a protective barrier between your child’s teeth and harmful germs. Typically, the preventative treatment is used to seal the deep grooves on the top of molars where cavities are most likely to form. Sealants are affordable and highly effective at preventing tooth decay.

Fluoride also prevents cavities. The mineral naturally hardens enamel so it is more resistant to tooth decay. Fluoride can be administered through multiple means. Often, it is brushed onto teeth so the mineral can be quickly absorbed by enamel. One of our dentists will ensure that your child is only exposed to a very safe level of fluoride.

Just like adults, children should visit one of our dental practices for regular cleanings and checkups. Preventative treatments and exams can save your family time and money.

Preparing for Your Child's First Dental Visit

Your child’s first dental visit is an exciting time! If it is age appropriate, we recommend talking about the dentist office routinely in the days and weeks leading up to your appointment. Start by watching videos or reading children’s books about going to the dentist. Talk openly with your child about what to expect during the exam and listen to any worries they may have.

Parents can also make oral hygiene fun at home. Talk about the importance of brushing and flossing. These discussions will instill healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
