Dentist Technology

The dental team of Magic Smiles is proud to offer the latest in dental technology for our patients. Whether you are undergoing a dental checkup or dental x-rays, our dentists work with the newest devices and technology available. Our investment in VELscope, intraoral scanners, and other forms of dental technology gives our dentists better diagnostic abilities that can result in less invasive and more focused dental treatments. We offer these advanced technologies at our two locations: Coffs Harbour and Woolgoolga.

Intraoral Scanners and Cameras

At Magic Smiles, we use the Medit i500, an advanced handheld intraoral scanner that captures high-quality images of your dentition. This technology replaces traditional impressions, which were messy and uncomfortable. Furthermore, the Medit i500 is incredibly fast and precise. It can render an accurate representation of your dentition in just a few minutes.
Digital impressions may be used to fabricate:

  • A dental model of your teeth and gums
  • Custom oral appliances, such as sports guards or night guards
  • Whitening trays
  • Dental crowns
  • Dental bridges
  • Porcelain veneers
  • Dentures

To take impressions, your dentist uses the handheld wand to capture images of your teeth, gums, and surrounding structures. These images are then uploaded to a computer software program, where they can be used to create a wide range of restorations. Because the files are digital, they can be easily shared with any other member of your dental team.

We also utilize intraoral cameras, which allow our dentists to capture detailed photographs of the teeth, gums, and other tissues. These images serve as helpful visual aids during the assessment and treatment processes. Intraoral cameras can highlight signs of gum disease, tooth decay, and other dental problems without the need for using a mirror.

VELscope: Advanced Oral Cancer Detection

The VELscope oral assessment system is a wireless handheld scope that tissue fluorescence to help dentists identify oral abnormalities that would normally not be visible to the naked eye. The device is one of the most trusted dental tools used in the detection of oral cancer and oral mucosal abnormalities. The detection procedure is non-invasive and highly affordable.

If you have risk factors for oral cancer (family history of cancer, advanced age, tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption), ask one of our dentists to schedule a VELscope oral assessment.

  • Wisdom tooth extraction
  • Diagnosis and treatment of cysts and tumors
  • Treatment of oral cancer
  • Dental implant placement
  • Diagnosis and treatment of congenital malformations
  • Diagnosis of TMJ disorder

Undergoing oral surgery can be a difficult decision. By providing our Coffs Harbour patients with a trusted oral surgeon who works in a familiar setting, we aim to make your surgical treatment as stress-free as possible.

Orthopantomogram (OPG)

Traditional x-rays take images from a fixed position. An orthopantomogram rotates around a patient’s head to take a detailed panoramic x-ray of the upper and lower jaws. Once the patient is situated, the scan typically takes around 20 seconds to complete.

OPG can be used during pre-implant planning. Before you can gain candidacy for dental implants, your dentist will need to determine that you have sufficient jawbone density. The advanced form of imaging can also detect bone fractures, injections, and other dental problems.

Soft Tissue Laser

Traditional gum contouring procedures used a scalpel to cut gum tissue. Our practices use advanced soft tissue lasers to gently remove excess gum tissue. The lasers drastically reduce recovery time. Patients who undergo laser gum contouring experience minimal bleeding. Soft tissue lasers are frequently used during restorative treatments.

Digital X-rays

Digital x-rays require the use of far less radiation than traditional x-rays. Digital x-rays are also immediately viewable, which saves patients and dentists time. Because digital x-rays are viewable through special software, there are further diagnostic benefits for the teeth x-ray. The dentists of Magic Smiles go to great lengths to reduce their patients’ exposure to radiation or dangerous metals and chemicals.
