Routine Dental Cleaning

One of the best ways to stay ahead of cavities and gum disease is through six-month dental cleans. The easy and affordable preventative treatments gently remove tough deposits of tartar that brushing alone cannot address.

Dental cleans are the best bet for preserving the health and beauty of your teeth and gums. Magic Smiles dental practices can schedule your visit at a time and day that is convenient for you. We have two locations serving Coffs Harbour and Woolgoolga.

Benefits of Dental Cleans

Dental cleans, along with good oral hygiene habits, allow you to prevent serious dental problems like root canals, gum recession, and even tooth loss. Many serious oral health issues begin as minor, highly treatable conditions. By investing a small amount of time and money in the short term, you can enjoy considerable cost-savings in the long run.

Dental cleans can reverse the earliest stages of gum disease. If your gums are red, swollen, or prone to bleeding when you brush or floss, you may have the early stages of gum disease known as gingivitis. Regular dental cleans (plus a renewed effort to brush, floss, and follow effective oral hygiene habits) can eliminate symptoms of gum disease.

Dental cleans also comes with cosmetic benefits. Tartar buildup is usually dark yellow or brown — not an attractive colour for a smile. While cleans do not offer the same whitening results as professional whitening treatments, the preventative treatment can reduce the prominence of red bleeding gums while removing dark tartar deposits.

I brush my teeth regularly. Do I really need professional cleans?

Brushing can be an effective means of removing plaque, but oral hygiene habits cannot remove calcified plaque, otherwise known as tartar. Only the special tools used by dentists can effectively scrape away the calcified buildup.

Brushing is not always effective at removing tartar from the deep grooves of molars and spaces between teeth that your toothbrush cannot reach. Brushing is important, but most effective when used in conjunction with twice-a-year dental cleans.

Some patients with certain risk factors can benefit from dental cleans at intervals of less than six months. Risk factors that may require more frequent cleans include tobacco use, advanced age, dry mouth, tooth loss, and history or family history of significant dental problems.

What to Expect During Your Dental Clean

Your dental clean will be handled by one of our esteemed dentists or hygienists. Most patients report that cleans, when done on a regular basis, are comfortable.

Before your clean begins, a visual oral exam will be completed. Using a small mouth mirror, the hygienist checks for signs of wear and tear, tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. If any major problems are detected, your dentist may talk to you about the findings and recommend treatment options.

Next, one of our dentists will use specialised hand scalers to gently remove tartar and plaque from the teeth surfaces. This technique (scaling) can remove plaque deposits from underneath the gum line where brushing and flossing alone cannot reach. In addition to hand scalers, ultrasonic instruments may be used as well. These advanced instruments use water and gentle vibrations to remove stubborn plaque and tartar.

Once the scaling has been completed, your teeth are polished using a special rotary device, gritty toothpaste, and a rubber cup. This process helps remove harmful biofilms and surface stains from the teeth and leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean.

During your dental clean, the hygienist or dentist will also thoroughly floss your teeth. Even if you floss routinely at home, this process helps remove plaque, tartar, and debris from hard-to-reach areas. Cleaning between the teeth is just as important as brushing. Ask your dentist or hygienist for tips on how to effectively floss your teeth at home between visits.

The total time it takes to complete a dental clean is usually about 30 minutes.

Preventative Treatments

In addition to your dental clean, your dentist or hygienist may recommend preventative treatments such as sealants or topical fluoride. If you are susceptible to tooth decay, these treatments can be beneficial in reducing the risk of cavities.
