Dental Checkups

At Magic Smiles, we believe that preventative dentistry is critical for preserving your oral health and preventing serious dental problems. Six Monthly check-ups at one of our three dental surgeries allows our dentists to check for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems in their early stages.

If you live in or around Coffs Harbour or Woolgoolga, we welcome you to join our dental family. We are always accepting new patients.

Benefits of Preventative Dentistry

Dental checkups allow your doctor to look for early signs of dental problems like:

  • Tooth decay
  • Worn or damaged prosthetics
  • Gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis)
  • Loose fillings
  • Oral cancer
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Dry mouth

The main benefit of check-ups is the prevention of serious dental problems, which can be costly and uncomfortable to treat. Minor tooth decay can be treated without the need for local anesthesia or the removal of significant amounts of natural tooth structure. The cost of a filling in a small cavity is very affordable and may be partly covered by dental insurance.

Advanced cavities may require anaesthetic injection to numb your tooth and significant amounts of drilling to remove decayed enamel. Then, you may require further expensive dental work to strengthen your tooth. All of these inconveniences can be prevented with annual dental check-ups at any of our three dental practices.

What happens during my checkup?

Your dental check-up and clean can be scheduled at the same time. Most patients can enjoy optimal oral health through regular visits to one of our dental surgeries. Individuals who have certain risk factors, such as tobacco use or advanced age, may benefit from more frequent visits.

First, your dentist will review your medical history in detail. Overall health issues are often linked to dental problems. Reviewing your medical and family history will give your dentist an overview of your health so certain considerations can be made if necessary.

Next, scans or x-rays are taken of your teeth. This allows your dentist to visualise the underlying structures. Radiographs are also used to determine bone density, identify important orofacial structures, and check the health of the jaw joints.

Your oral health exam will be performed by one of our dentists who will use specialised instruments to closely examine your teeth, gums, and other structures of the mouth. Our dentists are trained to look for the subtle signs of early-stage oral health problems, such as tooth decay and gum disease. If you are prone to cavities, your dentist may recommend preventative procedures like dental sealants or topical fluoride treatments. If problems are detected, he or she will discuss recommended treatment with you.

Once the exam is complete, your dental clean can begin. During this process, your hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth surfaces. This can be accomplished using specialised hand scalers or ultrasonic instruments. Finally, the teeth are polished with a special paste and a rubber cup to remove surface stains and harmful biofilms.

Check-ups offer a great opportunity to ask your dentist questions that have been on your mind. If you have experienced any recent issues, be sure to mention them during your appointment.

State-of-the-art Dental Technology

X-rays and other forms of imaging can discover dental problems that are not outwardly visible. Our offices offer advanced Orthopantomogram (OPG) panoramic x-rays that give our dentists a detailed image of a patient’s upper and lower jawbones. Our intraoral scanners allow patients to forgo the need for messy molds. If you are undergoing oral cancer screening, our VELscope can use a noninvasive light to detect tissue irregularities that could be a sign of oral cancer.

What happens if a dental problem is diagnosed?

All three of our dental practices are equipped to handle nearly any dental problem. Many minor dental problems, like a small chip or cavity, can be treated during your visit. If a more significant problem is found that requires extensive treatment, then a follow-up appointment can be scheduled as needed.
