Dental Implants

The loss of even one tooth can impair your ability to speak and chew with ease. While traditional restorations can restore oral function, only dental implants can truly replace one or more missing teeth. Implants are titanium posts that feel and function just like natural teeth.

Implants replace missing tooth roots. Once the titanium posts heal, they can support dental crowns, a bridge, partial denture, or full denture. No matter what the nature of your tooth loss is, the skilled and caring dentists of Magic Smiles can customize a treatment plan that restores beauty and natural chewing function to your smile using this advanced dental technology. Schedule an appointment today at one of our two practice locations in Coffs Harbour or Woolgoolga.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Most of our patients are great candidates for dental implants. One of the main candidacy considerations for this treatment is the density of your jawbone. In order to safely receive one or more dental implants, you will have to have healthy, dense jawbone tissue near the target treatment site.

Our office offers advanced imaging technology, including orthopantomography, that can map out your jaw as part of the pre-implant planning phase. We also have the option of referring you to get a CBCT (Cone Beam Computerized Tomography) if we need 3D assessment of your jaws. If you are found to have suffered from jawbone atrophy, you may require a bone graft to gain candidacy for implant placement.

Candidates should also be in good oral health and free from any conditions that could complicate healing and recovery. Be sure to review your medical history with your dentist during your consultation.

Benefits of Dental Implants

There are multiple treatment options that can address tooth loss. If you are missing one tooth, for example, you can be fitted with a dental bridge. The prosthetic requires that two of your teeth are shaved down in order to support two dental crowns. Over time, the two abutment teeth may wear due to the extra stress of supporting the missing teeth.

By placing one dental implant, you can forgo the need for making permanent alterations to your remaining natural teeth. The dental implant can support a dental crown that replaces your missing tooth.

Dental implants offer superior stability compared to traditional restorations because implants anchor false teeth directly to the jawbone. Once the implant fuses with surrounding jawbone tissue, it becomes a fully functioning part of your body.

Dental implants also promote jawbone health. Following the loss of even one tooth, the body begins to reabsorb the alveolar bone tissue that supported the missing tooth. By placing one or more dental implants soon after tooth loss, you can prevent the loss of jawbone density.

How are dental implants placed?

Every step of your dental implant treatment, from planning to surgery and final prosthetic placement, will be handled by one of our esteemed dentists. Once you are found to be a good candidate for dental implant placement, your oral surgery will be scheduled.

Local anesthesia will be used to ensure that you are relaxed. Your dentist will begin by making an incision in your gums to access the underlying jawbone. After a small hole is drilled to guide the implant, the implant will be placed in the jawbone.

Any incisions will be sutured, and gauze will be used to control bleeding. You will be given detailed recovery guidelines that are to be followed in the days and weeks following the outpatient procedure.
